Today we are starting a new format of 5 short devotional thoughts throughout the week to help you stay connected to God’s word in a way that is quick, easy for the summer. My hope is that meditating on God’s word in the morning will help you to stay connected with Him throughout the day.
This audio devotional is a companion to the She Hears Bible Study, today’s content is from Chapter 1- Mary- A Woman of Authority.
SHE HEARS CHAPTER 1
Mary, Mother of Jesus
Sometimes trusting God means saying yes before we understand the why.
In She Hears, we open with the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus, not just because she’s a familiar figure—but because she shows us what it looks like to trust God in the tension of the unknown. For Christian women today searching for how to follow God when His plan doesn’t make sense, Mary’s story isn’t just inspiring—it’s a guide.
"His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever He tells you.'" —John 2:5
This moment at the wedding in Cana is more than a miracle story. It’s a picture of faith-in-action. The wine had run out. Social disaster loomed. And Mary turned to Jesus—not with panic, but with purpose. She believed in Him before anyone else did. Before the miracles. Before the teaching. Before the crowds.
For women who feel unseen, confused by their circumstances, or weary from waiting, Mary reminds us that it’s possible to trust God—even when He hasn’t shown the outcome.
In the culture of the time, Mary’s voice would not have carried much weight. Women weren’t typically in positions of spiritual authority. And yet, she initiates the first miracle of Jesus’ public ministry—not by demanding, but by pointing others to Him with quiet authority: "Do whatever He tells you." Her trust wasn’t passive—it was active surrender.
How often do we withhold trust from God until we understand the plan? We want clarity before obedience. But Mary models the opposite: obedience before clarity. She didn’t need all the answers—she just needed to know the One giving the instructions.
She Hears explores how Mary teaches us to:
· Listen before speaking
· Trust without full understanding
· Obey without controlling the outcome
And maybe that’s where you are today. Wondering why God feels silent. Trying to understand what He’s doing. Questioning if He’s even listening. Like Mary, you can bring your concerns directly to Jesus. You don’t have to fix everything first. You don’t have to figure it all out. You can say, “I trust You,” even when your circumstances feel uncertain.
Because the God who honored Mary’s faith is still working today. He still honors trust. He still responds to obedience. And He still shows up in places that feel dry, empty, or unknown—and fills them with something new.
Want to explore more of Mary’s story? We spent an entire week with her on the Hearing Jesus podcast—six powerful episodes that trace her faith, struggles, and legacy. You can listen to all six episodes using the link above.
pray with me
Father God, help me to follow You the way Mary did. To trust before I understand. To obey when it doesn’t make sense. Thank You for being faithful, even in the places I don’t yet see. Give me the courage to say yes to You today.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
